Gay China

Homosexuality is politically ignored by law and not recognized as an “illness” anymore as it used to be until end of 2001. Despite it’s very enormous contribution to historical China’s literature, arts and crafts, being gay is often a big problem for many Chinese families. Sexuality is one big taboo, which is usually not to be discussed, especially not openly with families or close friends.. Turned a blind eye on younger Chinese, middle-aged men are very often forced into arranged marriages and do have to contribute to family values – at least one child is wanted!
In media average gay people appear usually related to crime which include pornography, prostitution, or drugs. Gay actors and singers are well-known and popular superstars.
Gay venues like bars, saunas are not well known, due to luck of information.
Meeting gay men is relatively easy i.e. in fashion departments of shopping centers, at main train station and bus terminals and nearby facilities. Also popular are public parks where families watching the kids playing while gay men cruising around. Of course, make eye contact first and for anything else you will need to go somewhere else.
Around 6 weeks before and during the annual people congress held its 2-weeks long meeting in Beijing, the police are going round to check any kind of venue, including gay, followed by raids and (temporarily) closures until the congress is over.
China is changing rapidly towards modern western style but is still sticking to some tradidional values. The hardliners are going softer and making room for more flexible newcomers. This already had a very important impact on gay life in China.
